In preparation for Yom Kippur
Kaparot
כפרות

Kaparot is a widespread Jewish custom carried out in preparation for Yom Kippur. The word kaparot means atonement — the same sense in which Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement.

The custom consists of carefully passing a chicken over one’s head three times while reciting a specific text. The chicken is then slaughtered humanely in accordance with the laws of kashrut, and discreetly donated to a charitable cause to be eaten.
